The Torrey Pines Kiwanis Club met for the first time in April 1982 at the La Jolla Radisson Hotel. We continue to meet each Wednesday morning from 7:25 a.m. to 8:30 a.m.

Our Torrey Pines Club currently has approximately 45 members and is a member of Kiwanis Division 21. Club members take pride in developing lasting personal relationships, building camaraderie, and supporting community service projects. The club has made a special effort to focus on helping San Diegans with disabilities through various recreational and rehabilitative programs. Our primary support is directed towards the disabled skiers scholarship program. Since 1988 the club has sent over 375 San Diegans with disabilities to Durango, Colorado to learn to ski. In addition, the club supports wheelchair road racing, wheelchair tennis, karate programs, aquatics programs and various other recreational and rehabilitative programs. For fiscal year ending September 30, 2006, we will fund nearly $63,000 in 28 different programs.

The annual La Jolla Festival of the ArtsTM is the Club's major fund raiser and is the primary focus of our members. This annual festival event was first held in 1987 and is traditionally held during third weekend of June.  The Festival’s mission is “to provide the highest quality arts and entertainment experience for our patrons, guests and participants in support of recreational and educational programs for San Diegans with disabilities.”

The 2005 Festival featured over 190 award-winning artists, 14 gourmet food vendors, and we hosted nearly 11,000 visitors. The Festival has attained recognition as the number one art show in San Diego County and one of the top festivals in the United States.

The Torrey Pines Kiwanis Club sponsors the La Jolla Country Day School Key Club, which is the high school Kiwanis organization.

The Torrey Pines Kiwanis Foundation La Jolla Festival of the Arts Foundation was established in 1990 as a Non-Profit Public Benefit Corporation. The Foundation manages and distributes the funds raised at the Festival to approximately 20 programs for San Diegans with disabilities.

Member Responsibilities

We strive to have all members attend every meeting. Awards are given (occasionally) for perfect attendance.  Realistically, to be an asset to the club your attendance should exceed 75%.

Each member is expected to participate in the club's major project The La Jolla Festival of the ArtsTM.  This event is held for an entire weekend in June.

Each member serves as Kiwanian of the day (KOD) when assigned, once or twice per year. The KOD fines members, introduces the guest speaker and provides the raffle prize. We encourage happy dollars. The money raised by happy dollars and fines subsidizes our annual holiday party.

Members participate in weekly meetings as requested (lead Pledge, Invocation, etc...). Please tell the President if you have any suggestions for a speaker. The better the speakers, the more interesting the meeting.

We encourage members to participate in other events and sponsored charitable programs as your time permits.
