"An art festival this memorable can only be The La Jolla."

April 2010

We just wrapped up the artist judging for 2010 and, like every year that I have been associated with the Festival, it is ALWAYS tough to choose the west's finest 190 artists out of the hundreds who apply.  I send a big thanks to the artists, gallery owners, and other professionals who comprise my jury.  Look for a list of the artists on the ARTIST page in mid-May.

We have an outstanding line up of artists this year.  In addition to the extraordinary paintings, glasswork, ceramics, photography, and fiber that you have come to expect from this show, keep your eye out for new entries in furniture and over-sized sculpture. It is very impressive.

Our street-chalking presentation, Calle Color', has become the new home in San Diego to showcase the amazing, temporary images of chalk on an asphalt canvas.  This must-see exhibition is included free with admission to the Festival.  Calle Color': a live street chalking exhibition where nationally recognized Madonnari (street painters) create a beautiful street of colors.

February 2010

Hello everyone; please let me introduce myself.  I'm Don Ludwig and this is my third time at the helm of this prestigious event.  I thought that my life would be golf courses and back yard after more than 30 years with SeaWorld Adventure Park, but it was not to be.  This La Jolla Festival of the Arts and the people it serves are so important to me that I was glad to answer the call when I was asked to bring my experience to the Festival management.

It's our 24th year!  The Festival Board has been ramping up with some new events and challenges for 2010.  First, you'll find our Festival design is a little different this year as we had to move a little to accommodate construction on the campus.  Note that the dates this year are June 26-27.  We plan to have some awesome sports cars to show off, so guys: this Festival isn't all girl's stuff!  Our street chalking program was so successful last year that we are bringing it back.  And I am pleased to report that Warwick's Bookstore, San Diego's favorite independent bookseller, will again host the Warwick's Pavilion and feature prominent authors and chefs.  These chef events were standing-room-only when they were inaugurated two years ago.

We are again fortunate to be supported this year by our colleagues at Entijuanarte, the artist's collective in Baja California Norte.  In addition to nurturing the art world of Baja, Entijuanarte is helping us promote the Festival to buyers there.  Thanks to Cecilia Ochoa-Vasquez and Karla Duarte for all their help.

We'll be in touch often as the date grows closer.  If you haven't already done so, be sure to sign up for our newsletter. Just follow the links on any page.

¡Bienvenidos!
