Calle Color


The La Jolla Festival of the Arts is becoming the new San Diego home to showcase the amazing, temporary images of chalk on an asphalt canvas.  This must-see exhibition is included free with admission to the Festival.  Calle Color': a live street chalking exhibition where nationally recognized Madonnari (street painters) create a beautiful street of colors.

Calle Color
will feature the work of Melanie Stimmel Van Latum  and these premier street artists:

  • Lysa Ashley is an artist and teacher whose striking chalk masterpieces consistently amaze crowds.

  • Chris Brake has participated in the Santa Clarita Street Art Festival and Mission Viejo's Fun with Chalk. 

  • Melanie Stimmell Van Latum is a Signature Member of the Pastel Society of America

  • Mark Cummings is a 2009 Finalist in the Smithsonian's Tri-Annual Outwin Boochever Portrait Contest.  

  • Lorelle Miller has been an award winning artist since early childhood and her work appears in many collections throughout the United States.

  • Lori Escalera is an internationally acclaimed chalk artist, graphic designer, and was the 2009 Featured Madonnaro at the La Jolla Festival of the Arts.

  • Julio Jimenez  Julio Jimenez has been Street Painting for a little over 4 years with an eclectic portfolio:drawing automobiles, to anatomy, to buildings, to renditions of masterpieces, to 3d anamorphic, to food, to animals.

  • Liliana Mai is a talented newcomer who debuted at the 2009 La Jolla Festival of the Arts, and immediately had her work featured on a local TV morning show.

  • Bill Spiess is one of the most popular artists at the annual ArtSplash exhibition in Carlsbad.

  • Ann Hefferman created her first street painting 17 years ago for Santa Barbara’s I Madonnari festival. Ann’s work on pavement and paper is often inspired by forms in nature, especially botanical subjects.

  • Alice Scott Crittenden has been working with pastels for over 30 years. Alice says that: "The enthusiasm, and intensity I experience within myself as well as from the onlookers is stimulating. I enjoy the interaction with the viewers as they struggle to understand the impermanence of chalking on the street."

The Calle Color' exhibition is included in the $10 admission price of the La Jolla Festival of the Arts. Be sure to view the work of promising young art students at the competition held adjacent to the exhibition. The Festival is open from 9:00-5:00 on June 26-27.

About the Featured Artist, Melanie Stimmel Van Latum

Melanie Stimmel Van Latum has been selected to be the Featured Chalk Artist at the 24th Annual La Jolla Festival of the Arts™, June 26-27, 2010.

This internationally recognized Street Painter has been participating in chalk art festivals since 1998 and worked with clients in Turkey, Holland, France, Canada, and is in great demand all over the U.S.  She is the only woman to have won the much coveted title of 'Maestra Modonnara' (Master Street Painter), along with several gold medals, for her street paintings in both Italy and Germany. This summer she will travel to the UK to be a featured artist at the London Fringe Festival ’10.

Melanie is a Signature Member of the Pastel Society of America, and the Co-Founder of two prominent organizations in the chalk painting world including the Street Painting Society and the Street Painting Academy. She is a strong supporter of Arts in Education and Therapy in both the Orange County and Los Angeles areas. Melanie is currently working in collaboration with teachers in South Central Los Angeles to integrate the arts into their classroom curriculum and will begin sharing her passion for street painting with children at Choc Hospital in Orange County.

Although Melanie specializes in large scale collaborative street painting projects and renaissance inspired chalk art, she is also a recognized Fine Artist who’s work on canvas is currently hanging in several galleries throughout California.
